Great style doesn't hinge on the wearer being young and thin! I want to see more bridal looks that show a little more personality. Are you bold? Playful? Whimsical? Romantic? Put it into your bridal look.

Working alone, particularly during a busy wedding season, it's so important to take a moment to really celebrate every dress I get to make. It's such a privilege to be trusted with these gowns, I would hate for them to start feeling like just another check on a to do list. I very rarely have many finished wedding dresses in my studio- as soon as theyre finished they go off to their brides so in March when I had these three all at once Sarah offered to come and take some studio photos with me and I couldnt be happier with the result.

Every wedding dress on a rail in a bridal boutique has to earn it's keep- there is mounting pressure on bridal boutiques that is coming from brides wanting to go and experience trying on lots of dresses, and that pressure is leading to (in my opinion) quite homogeneous design. I am not alone in thinking that a lot of wedding dresses look the same!
If you're happy with that look and that's what you're going for then it's great, but if I can mix metaphors for a moment, you're not going to get a good milkshake at home depot.
If you want an alternative wedding dress, there are so many great options to chose from. The uk has so many fantastic bridal dressmakers at the moment (check out @_florafletcher, @flossyanddossy, @dandelionsandpearls, @solunahstudio, @sophierosebridal, @gracelanelondon) and having a dress made is often the same price as buying a boutique dress and having it altered.

I love that this dress layers silks with different finishes to create depth in the look- the charmeuse layer on top is shiny and pearly and the crepe dress underneath is matt, making the whole dress look like it came out of a painting.

Alexandra made the most beautiful bride in her bespoke organza and crepe gown- I absolutely loved making these beautiful unusual sleeves, a variation on my poet and juliette sleeves. The over layer of the dress could be removed for a more comfortable, casual evening look.
This dress is such a beautiful example of the way the unique chemistry between a bride and a dressmaker can create such a personal look- and Alexandra styled it so perfectly with the hair and shoes!

The inside of a bespoke Ailsa Munro dress designed to be worn with WINGS.
2 things you *can't* see here- the boning sewn into every seam to give the dress structure, and extra wide side seams so that my dresses can all be let out if you change size and want to wear your dress again. Industry standard seams are 1cm, which means there is very little fabric available to change sizes. 2.5cm seams mean you could let the seam out by 6cm, more than a full dress size! And still have a really decent seam.

I hear all the time from brides that they're tired of seeing the same wedding dress over and over. The market is saturated with lots of the same styles- shiny polyester satin, scratchy lace, and sweetheart necklines that feel wrong for a wedding day.

The weddings I'm drawn to, and the brides I'm excited to work with, usually want something different. They want a wedding dress that makes them feel like they've stepped straight out of a period drama. Whimsical, romantic and unexpected. A dress that lets them move, breathe and eat on their wedding day, while still feeling like a beautiful bride.

That's why I started making my wedding dresses- each one designed and made for individual brides. The goal is always to make a dress I can't imagine anyone else wearing, because it fits and suits the bride so beautifully she owns it entirely.
Not trendy, probably not timeless, but authentic to the bride and the wedding she has planned.

Actually very few of my brides are local to me- and some live too far away to come in for the number of fittings I need to make a Couture dress. In these cases I work on a Made To Measure basis and design and create a dress without any in person fittings.
We complete a virtual consultation which involves sharing all your ideas for your wedding dress while I sketch, then I make a version of the bodice in cheap fabric to check the fit. You try it on, and once I've seen some photos I can make some simple adjustments to the pattern to improve the fit before making the dress in the final fabric.

Every time someone posts anything AI, someone comes into the comments mentioning the use of water. As someone who feels so passionately about slow fashion and the impact of clothing consumption on our planet I'm excited that people are considering the impact, but frustrated that people don't necessarily know how big of an impact our clothing choices can make on our water footprint. One new cotton tshirt uses as much fresh water as 5400 AI searches!

Obviously ai is new and conspicuous but if we're looking to reduce our footprint, our clothes are a great place to start.

The bridal boutique experience is not free, and we have to stop thinking about it like it is.

At the end of the day, these are small businesses, usually run by women, and if we treat them like public galleries where we can go and peruse without spending any money, lots of them will simply fold.

Ultimately, if you are going in in good faith, open to the prospect of buying a wedding dress, then you're using them properly. If you are not willing to spend the money on the boutique experience, there are ways around it! You can buy a dress online, go to a charity shop boutique or have a dress made for you. But if you go into a boutique, it's completely fair for them to try every trick they have to sell you a dress, and if you know you DON'T want that, you might end up with a dress you regret.

Kirsen was wearing silver when she met her husband so it was only fitting we made a silver silk wedding gown with all the sweet whimsical details- silver scallop lace, silver covered buttons, navy velvet bow and hand dyed blue ribbons on the shoulders. 🩶🩶🩶

The problem with hearing "satin" and thinking "sil

The problem with hearing "satin" and thinking "silk" is that bridal designers are using this to sell you polyester dresses.
If you don't care, that's absolutely fine! But if you do care, I'm so angry on your behalf that these words are being used as a way to deliberately pass off plastic dresses as silk. You should not need advanced understanding of fabric to not get ripped off shopping for a wedding dress. I don't think bridal boutiques always even know what they're doing- but people absolutely are out here spending £3000 on a dress that they BELIEVE is silk, when it is not.
My favourite analogy is always to think about "roast potatoes"- words like "chiffon/satin/organza" are like "roast", words like "silk/polyester/cupro" are the "potatoes".
